Overwhelmed
Autism & Anxiety Visualized

As an autistic, I am a contradiction: needing to experience the world and all its beauties yet fearing what it does to me.  Each experience is an attack on my senses.  Things I desire invoke panic.  Social interactions confuse me and leave me drained.

When I first heard the song Overwhelmed, by Royal and the Serpent, I immediately related to it.  At some point, I realized why I liked it so much.  It does not judge; it simply is.  The realization that I do not have to fight against the symptoms I struggle with took an enormous weight off of me.  I could choose to be okay with feeling not okay.

I hoped to capture beauty through the lens of unease in this project, a visual representation of my daily life. Although the words and photos may seem negative, they are simply truths, presented with acceptance and a bit of hope that perhaps I will get to a place where I can truly be the adventurous extrovert I am.
